Language contact (2025/2026)

Module: Methods and Applications
Taught by Prof. Nicole Nau
WS 2025/2026

Course description

In this class, students learn to observe, document, analyze and interpret phenomena that result from the interaction of people with two or more languages (this phrase is intentionally ambiguous). We will look both at results that have had a lasting effect on language systems (borrowing, new contact languages ) and at processes going on in speaking and writing (for example, code-switching), as well as discuss how to distinguish between results and processes, and how these two perspectives are connected. The study of language contact leads to insights about the nature of language, and results may be applied language teaching and various other fields. Working on the class topic, students further develop their skills in designing and carrying out research projects and writing comprehensive reports.
