Course description

The aim of this course is to provide knowledge about bi- and multilingualism from a psycholinguistic and cognitive perspective. We will be concerned with the question of how bi- and multilingual individuals acquire, process, and store language. Examples of the issues the course covers include the three factors of language design (Chomsky 2005), the age factor in second language acquisition, and the role of cross-linguistic influence in language acquisition and processing. Students are expected to (i) read weekly assigned readings, (ii) prepare a short presentation on one of the topics covered in the course, and (iii) develop a concept of an original study based on the relevant literature.
